Dr. Marty Makary
Healthcare Futurist, New York Times Bestselling Author, Johns Hopkins Surgeon & Public Health Expert
 

Dr. Makary will share, his common-sense ways to address healthcare challenges as he provides insights from his latest book, The Price We Pay. He correlates the history of American medicine with its modern-day conundrums. Healthcare is complex and its problems can be difficult to solve. Dr. Makary uses first-hand stories to illustrate the decision points that await policy makers and patients. He reviews the resultant scenarios and explains how we can prepare for upcoming changes to healthcare. In a non-partisan way, he highlights both the exciting positive changes in healthcare as well as it’s concerning trends.

About Dr. Marty Makary

Marty is the recipient of the 2020 Business Book of the Year Award for The Price We Pay. A professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins Carey School, he has published over 250 scientific articles on the re-design of health care, medical innovation, and health equity. Dr. Makary has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine and is an editor of Medpage Today. He has written for The Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and USA Today.

His current research focuses on health care transparency and the re-design of health care. His book Unaccountable turned into the T.V. series “The Resident” and his newest bestselling book, The Price We Pay, was described by Don Berwick as “a deep dive into the real issues driving up the price of health care” and by Steve Forbes as “a must-read for every American”.

He is the recipient of the Nobility in Science Award from the National Pancreas Foundation and has been a visiting professor at over 20 medical schools. Dr. Makary was the lead author of the original publications on the surgery checklist and later served in leadership roles at the World Health Organization. Dr. Makary is the chairman of the African Mission Healthcare medical advisory board and leads several health care collaboratives.
