Mark Welch serves as Senior Vice President of Supply Chain for Novant Health, overseeing non-labor expenditures, logistics, operations, procurement, sourcing, and clinical supply chain engagement. He has led cost-control initiatives, implemented operational improvements, and advanced strategies to strengthen team member retention.
Welch chairs the Board of MNS Network LLC, a coalition of two integrated networks focused on reducing supply chain costs through shared volume, spend management, and collective expertise.
Since joining Novant Health in 2005, Welch has held multiple leadership roles, including Vice President of Supply Chain Operations, Vice President of the Novant Health Logistics Center, and Vice President of Strategic Sourcing. He has guided organizational changes to enhance delivery models, streamline operations, and support value-based performance.
His leadership approach emphasizes collaboration with internal stakeholders and vendors, promoting transparency, pricing integrity, and a shift from price-driven to value- and quality-driven procurement practices.
In 2012, Welch partnered with the Chief Medical Officer to launch a clinical variation reduction team, a transformational initiative that has generated more than $750 million in savings over the past decade. The program’s success is driven by exceptional physician engagement, which has also strengthened sourcing-executive retention and deepened alignment across clinical and operational teams. This collaborative model not only advanced value-based care but also proved pivotal during pandemic-related supply chain disruptions, enabling Novant Health to respond with speed, discipline, and resilience.
Under his leadership, Novant Health has achieved a 12–15% annual reduction in contracted supply chain general ledger costs and realized more than $750 million in savings over the past decade.
Welch holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from The Ohio State University and a Master of Health Administration from Pfeiffer University.
